Keito Aoki: “I want to hoist Hime-san up at the National Stadium”

On the 5th of April, Toyota Verblitz faced Kubota Spears Funabashi Tokyo-Bay in Round 14 of League One at Himaraya Stadium Gifu. In heavy rain and strong winds, Verblitz dominated the physical battle throughout, securing an emphatic 24–7 victory with a bonus point.

Relentless rain and swirling winds set the scene, but the “Raijin” turned the spring storm to their advantage. Against the league leaders and one of the most physical sides in the competition, Verblitz controlled the breakdown and limited their opponents to just one late try.

From kickoff, Verblitz played on the front foot. The opening try came in the 11th minute through winger Mark Tele’a, whose sharp running on the slippery surface once again showcased his All Blacks class. Three first-half tries gave Verblitz a 17–0 lead at the break. Early in the second half, debut starter Aidan Morgan crossed for his first try, extending the lead to 24–0 and effectively sealing the game.

“We prepared well for a team we knew we had to match physically. What we’ve been building since pre-season is finally coming together,” said head coach Steve Hansen.

Possession slightly favored Toyota at 51%, while territory was nearly even at 43%. However, their ability to avoid isolation at contact, provide quick support, and maintain tight passing connections ensured strong ball retention and a controlled performance.

“It wasn’t just about matching their physicality—we outperformed them in ball security, and that was crucial,” Hansen added.

There was another layer behind the team’s performance. Captain Kazuki Himeno had been forced off with an Achilles injury in the previous match and was later ruled out for the rest of the season.

Game captain Yoshikatsu Hikosaka reflected: “Hime put his body on the line more than anyone. Instead of relying on him, each of us stepped up. It wasn’t about being told what to do—we took initiative ourselves.”

Stepping into the No.8 role was Keito Aoki, making only his second appearance in the position since Japan XV duty.

“Everyone helped me a lot out there,” Aoki said. He repeatedly disrupted opposition possession and helped avert danger. Facing one of the most physical teams in the league also provided valuable lessons.

“They were the most physical team I’ve faced. When I carried the ball, I was lifted like a kid. It really made me think about how I should approach those situations.”

Aoki also spoke of his determination moving forward.

“Hime-san is probably the most frustrated right now. All I can do is put my body on the line and bring energy to the team. It wasn’t just me—everyone on the field did that, and that’s why we won the collisions.”

Hingano Lolohea, who shifted from lock to flanker, made a major impact, breaking through the defense multiple times and scoring a try in the first half. He was named Player of the Match.

“I’m just happy we could win at home,” said the rookie, who only graduated from Asahi University last month. His former teammates were once again in the stands, supporting him despite the heavy rain.

Starting at inside center, Morgan also impressed with his game management.

“Matsuda, Komura, and Morgan handled their kicking game well today. I’m also pleased with Nick, who came on in the second half,” Hansen noted.

Flanker Issa Yamakawa, who entered in the 65th minute, made his first League One appearance in two seasons.

“I just focused on putting my body on the line in defense. Being able to contribute to the win and report back to the Mirai Match boys means a lot.”

With both forwards and backs providing more selection options, Verblitz are building a strong squad cycle where anyone can step in and perform.

After a bye week, they return on April 18 for the annual “Raijin Festival” at Toyota Stadium against the Kobe Steelers, who have already secured a playoff spot. With four games remaining, Verblitz cannot afford to drop any points in their push for a top-six finish.

“My goal this season is to finish in the top six, win the final, and lift Hime-san in celebration at the National Stadium,” Aoki said.

If they can maintain the standard shown in this match, the results will follow.
