Kosei Miki: “This is the moment to show what we’ve built, in these tough conditions”
Toyota Verblitz have announced their squad to face Kubota Spears Funabashi Tokyo-Bay on the 4th of April at Gifu Memorial Center Nagaragawa Stadium.
Wing Taichi Takahashi returns after missing the previous round due to HIA protocols, while Keito Aoki comes in at No.8 to replace injured captain Kazuki Himeno. Hingano Lolohea shifts from lock to the back row. Aidan Morgan is set for his first start at inside centre at no.12, and the bench features Ryusei Kato, Ryusei Koike, and Issa Yamakawa—players who have sharpened their edge in the Mirai Matches.
New recruit Aidan Morgan has mostly started at fly-half in the Mirai Matches this season, earning high praise for his ability to control and move the line. However, due to squad composition, his League One appearances have been limited to three off the bench.
“I’ve had no frustration. My role is always to give everything for the team each week, and that hasn’t changed. When I get the chance, I want to help the team deliver its best performance.”
While his preferred position is No.10, his versatility across multiple roles is a key strength. Last season, he played for Ulster in Europe and joined Verblitz with the goal of playing “fast, high-skill rugby.” Originally from New Zealand, he is now working under head coach Steve Hansen and co-coach Ian Foster—two highly respected figures back home.
“I feel very lucky to be coached by them. My understanding of the game, my management, and my skill level have all improved.”
Flanker Kosei Miki, who played the full 80 minutes in the win over Yokohama Eagles last round, raised his fist high at full-time—it was his first victory of the season in a match he featured in. Since Round 6 against Shizuoka BlueRevs, he had mainly been playing in the Mirai Matches.
“It was a mix of emotions, but I believe the most important role of a support player is to always think about what the team needs to win. Even when I wasn’t selected, I kept asking myself what I could do. Now that my opportunity has come, I just want to stay composed and perform.”
Rain is forecast on match day, and Kubota Spears currently sit top of the league with a powerful forward pack.
“I want to lead from the front and take on the challenge defensively. In attack, I want to generate momentum. This is the time to show what we’ve built, especially in these tough conditions.”
Miki’s trademark is his headgear—this season, he’s been wearing a white one.
“Last year I wore navy, but I got injured in a game, and then received a red card in my comeback match,” he said with a smile. “My colleagues say the white one makes it easier to spot.”
As the season heads into its final stretch, squad depth will be tested—and the energy brought by these hungry players could prove to be a crucial boost.
